Varicose veins are a condition that can cause numerous complaints such as leg pain, cramps, tingling, itching, and skin discoloration. If left untreated, they may lead to blood clotting and non-healing wounds or ulcers on the legs, significantly affecting quality of life.

Both Prolonged Sitting and Standing Are Risk Factors

Varicose veins can appear as spiderweb-like capillaries on the legs or as enlarged, thick, and twisted veins that protrude from the skin. Veins carry blood back to the heart and contain valves to ensure that blood flows in one direction. Excessive pressure and blockages in the veins can cause these valves to fail, leading to backward blood flow, known as reflux. This process, combined with gravity, results in varicose veins. Occupational settings that require prolonged standing or sitting, excess weight, genetic predisposition, wearing tight clothing, high heels, pregnancy, and the use of birth control pills are among the factors that increase the likelihood of developing varicose veins.

Make an Effort to Stay Active Whenever Possible

To prevent varicose veins, engage in exercises that activate the calf muscles, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, Pilates, or yoga.
Avoid smoking, tight clothing, and high heels. Refrain from prolonged sun exposure and avoid standing or sitting still for extended periods. If your job requires long hours of sitting or standing, consider using compression stockings for support. Prioritize movement at every opportunity and elevate your legs whenever possible to relieve strain.

Varicose Vein Treatment Improves Quality of Life

Nowadays, varicose veins can be treated quickly and effectively with non-surgical, minimally invasive techniques. To seal the leakage causing varicose veins, methods such as laser, radiofrequency, and adhesive-based endovenous treatments provide a comfortable solution without the need for anesthesia or hospital admission, allowing you to return home the same day.
Additionally, the enlarged veins and spider veins on your legs can be treated with a procedure called “sclerotherapy,” a simple injection-based treatment. Treating varicose veins is an art—be sure to choose the right specialist for the best results.
