Dental Implant Application

Dentistry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the preservation, treatment, and improvement of oral and dental health. Tooth decay, gum diseases, and tooth loss are common issues many people face. Tooth loss can occur due to various reasons and can lead to serious consequences that affect one's daily life. There are several methods used in dentistry to treat tooth loss, and one of the most effective and permanent treatments is the dental implant application.

What is an Implant?

Dental implants are a permanent solution where artificial tooth roots are created and placed into the jawbone. An implant is a titanium screw-like structure that is inserted into the jawbone. Local anesthesia is applied during the implant placement process, and it requires a surgical procedure. Implants function as artificial tooth roots, similar to natural teeth, allowing them to move and perform their functions. Porcelain crowns placed on the implants provide an aesthetic appearance that mimics natural teeth.

What Age Range Can Implants Be Applied?

Implant applications are typically preferred for adults who have lost teeth. Ideally, the jawbones should have completed their growth process for an implant application. This typically occurs by the end of adolescence or early adulthood. However, age alone is not an obstacle for implant applications. What matters is the candidate's general health and the suitability of the jawbone. Implant applications are not recommended for children whose jawbones have not completed their growth process. Therefore, implants are usually preferred in individuals over the age of 18. However, in certain cases, such as early tooth loss or congenital missing teeth, implants may be applied before the jawbones' growth is fully completed. These cases are evaluated individually by the dentist and implants can be applied when deemed appropriate.

What are the Advantages of Implants?

  • Mimicking Natural Teeth: Since implants are artificial tooth roots, they can mimic the functions of natural teeth. They can be used without any restriction in activities like eating, speaking, and chewing.
  • Permanent Solution: Implants provide a longer-lasting solution compared to other dental treatments. If placed correctly, implants can last a lifetime.
  • Preserving Surrounding Teeth: Unlike traditional bridges, implants do not require the cutting or grinding of neighboring teeth. This helps preserve the integrity of healthy teeth.
  • Prevention of Bone Loss: Implants help prevent jawbone resorption since they are placed directly into the jawbone. Without teeth, the jawbone tends to shrink over time, but implants prevent this process.
  • Aesthetic Appearance: Porcelain crowns placed on implants offer a natural-looking aesthetic. Implants help restore the patient's confidence by improving their smile.

What are the Stages of Implant Application?

  • Evaluation: Before the implant application, the dentist conducts a series of X-rays and imaging tests to assess the oral structure and jawbone. This evaluation helps determine the suitability of the implant and the best position for placement.
  • Implant Placement: The implant placement procedure is done under local anesthesia. The dentist makes a small incision in the jawbone and places the implant in the correct position. The implant will remain in place while it integrates with the jawbone over time.
  • Healing Process: A waiting period is necessary for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. This period typically lasts several months. During this process, a temporary prosthesis may be used.
  • Temporary Prosthesis Application: During the healing process, a temporary prosthesis can be placed to provide both aesthetic and functional solutions.
  • Porcelain Crown Application: After the implant has fully healed, a permanent porcelain crown or prosthesis is placed. At this stage, the implant’s shape and size are measured, and a custom crown or prosthesis is created for the patient.

In conclusion, dental implants provide an effective, permanent, and aesthetic solution for tooth loss. Implants mimic the functions of natural teeth and offer a long-lasting treatment option. They do not harm surrounding teeth and prevent jawbone resorption, making them an ideal choice for individuals with missing teeth. However, implants may not be suitable for every patient, and not all implant applications are successful. Therefore, it is important to consult with an experienced dentist and undergo a proper evaluation before deciding on an implant.
