Modern Dentistry: Multidisciplinary Treatment / Dt. Sevim KESKİNER

Just like the developing and changing world, Dentistry is also undergoing a rapid process of change and development. One of the branches that has quickly adapted to developing technological possibilities is dental services.

Today, patients who visit a dental clinic for treatment can be treated with advanced technological possibilities at each stage, from planning to the final result. Although technology improves treatment standards and makes the dentist’s job easier, it is quite difficult for a single dentist to plan and apply all treatment procedures correctly on their own.

In dental practices, there are different specialties such as orthodontics, periodontology, endodontics, restorative dental treatments, prosthetic dental treatments, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and pedodontics. Technological developments and new treatment methods are rapidly emerging in each of these specialties. It is quite difficult for a single dentist to follow and apply the developing technology and changing treatment methods in all these areas today.

Treatments performed in the field of oral and dental health are planned and carried out by dentists who specialize in different areas, and this is referred to as multidisciplinary treatment. Dentists with different interests and specialties can work together as a team within their areas of expertise and provide much more successful treatments.

In order to perform healthier prosthetic treatment, it is essential to first ensure the health of periodontal tissues, meaning the gums must be brought to an appropriate state. Similarly, in some cases, orthodontic treatment may be required to adjust the position of neighboring teeth that have moved or tilted after tooth extraction, or to create a suitable space for an implant. Before orthodontic treatment, periodontal treatments or restorative treatments may be necessary to optimize the health of the teeth and surrounding tissues.

Before applying all these multidisciplinary treatments, the case should be evaluated together by the dentists who will perform the procedures as a team. A joint planning process should be made to achieve the most aesthetic and functional treatment results. This joint evaluation by dentists from different disciplines is crucial for a more accurate and successful treatment plan and satisfying treatment outcomes.

Since our clinic has dentists with different interests and specialties, this planning process can be carried out much more easily and accessibly, and the most appropriate treatment options can be quickly presented to our patients.
